Developed as part of the applied research project
“Eco-sustainability and Value at the Cooperative Retail Outlet”, this is a pilot project, not replicable as a model in every location, based on a life-cycle approach that accounts for the environmental impacts of every phase of the building’s life cycle. It treats the site and the ecosystem as resources and the buildings as open architectural organisms, grounding decisions in an analysis of the project’s overall cost in social, energy, and environmental terms. Conceived as a neighborhood store, the building takes shape from the design of the outdoor spaces, the relationships between pedestrian and bicycle paths, the plazas, the gathering places, and the streets, to give the location a new identity based on community values, openness, accessibility, beauty, and hospitality.
